SPRED (SPecial REligious Development) is an international programme which was  developed in the 1960’s in Europe and was first introduced into our Archdiocese in 1997.

The mission of SPRED is:

  •  to form small communities of faith in parishes to welcome children and adults with  learning  disabilities
  •  to provide an appropriate method of catechesis
  •  to foster full inclusion in assemblies of worship

There are approximately a dozen parishioners involved in SPRED either as a catechist, a friend or a driver in the parish group or one of the groups in the SPRED centre in George Square. We meet fortnightly in St Kentigern’s Church on Monday evenings between September and June. Our meetings last from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm and our group is for teenagers/young adults. Members of a SPRED group are referred to as ‘friends’. We currently have 9 members: 3 friends from age 14 to 22 years, 4 catechists, an activity catechist and a leader catechist.
